Christmas Past
Pine needles falling. the holly wreath has faded
The Christmas decorations are looking sad and jaded
The bushes once a-sparkle are now but bulbs and wire
The snowman leading up the path looks out of place and dire
That sleigh with leaping reindeer halfway up the wall
Seems garish in the daylight and destined for a fall
The cards with cheery message are piled and put away
And stocking folded neatly for next Christmas Day
The final bones of turkey are lurking in the bin
So many meals provided. Who’s hoping to stay thin?
Those puddings pies and custards, chocolates and cream
And adding to the swelling hips, trifle and ice-cream
Christmas past and over, we aim to start again
Clearing up the debris, eating food that’s plain
Sorting out old letters, cleaning up once more
Until the old Spring-cleaning urge comes knocking on the door
