Something New
There is a wise old saying Then I click the spot marked x
That I have often heard I hear a little bell
“To teach new tricks to old dogs Nothing moves, the thing is stuck
Is really quite absurd” Computer, go to hell
A recent innovation I hunt among the booklets
To me – a new PC In Dutch and Japanese
Stands for a new computer Arabic and German script
And hours of misery To put my mind at ease.
It came in many boxes At last a bit of English
Connections by the mile I read it all with care
A maze of plugs and sockets Then it says you boot it up
In ever growing pile A sentiment I share!
A keyboard, screen and modem I get the darned thing working
Programmes on a disc But where’s the work I had?
A printer and a scanner Gone to Great File in the Sky
My sanity’s at risk! Oh I'm feeling bad
The salesman starts it working I’ve been sitting here an hour
He sits and taps away What have I produced?
There’s humming and strange noises Headache and frustration
My mind’s in disarray Naught of any use!
He disappears and leaves me With pencil and with paper
With this new-fangled mass Notebook pad and pen
Humming, blinking, whirring It’s quicker still to write it
Will this nightmare pass? Than type it out again.
At last a blank screen greets me
I type a word or two
I press another button
It jumps a line or two
I write another sentence
But it’s mixed up with the first
Then it disappears from sight
I give a silent curse
