Poem of the Month
Saturday Night Out
You’re leaving your TV, Twitter and Tweet
Neglecting your personal PC
Ignoring this modern technology
Hoping for live repartee
You’ve decided to come to the dancing
It’s friendly and fun you’ve been told
There are other live humans attending
As in the great days of old.
You’ve come to contact the living
To talk and make friendships perchance
To listen to vibrant music
An invitation to dance.
But the caller has dances he wants to try out
It’s the latest one on his long list
No time for chatter. Make up a set.
A three couple set. I insist!
The other five people are listening – intent
All wondering where to go.
The pressure is on. It’s half figure eight!
Concentration is low.
It’s over and just as you sigh with relief
Preparing to flop in a chair
Straightway there’s another formation
You stay in the set as a pair.
The lone lady sitting there watching the scene
Is patiently waiting her turn
Three dances already she’s missed in a row
A matter of some concern.
There’s no one to speak to and nowhere to go
No wonder she feels rejected
She came for an evening of laughter and fun
But now she’s really dejected
So give us those dances one at a time
With social exchange a priority
Mixing and moving and talking together
Will suit the great majority.
