The Fortune Teller
She peered at the lines on the palm of my hand
You will travel quite soon the length of the land
Disbelieving I gave her in silver the fee
Travelling that far - it cannot be me.
But very soon after I boarded the train
And set off for Stockton to meet Jack again
He’d travelled to Shetland and heard fiddle playing
Would I like to join him his letter was saying
But then all his eagerness lapsed when I came
He was reluctant, his excuses were lame
So I made up my mind that I’d go on my own
His parting shot to me: “You cannot go alone”
As I walked in the airport I thought “Yes I can”
I’ll not be dictated to by a mere man
With some trepidation I boarded the plane
And within minutes was airborne again
Soon I looked down at the end of my flight
Essential the next thing – a bed for the night
Bed and breakfast acquired I walked past a hall
And noticed a poster attached to the wall
It said Shetland Fiddlers were playing that night
My spirits rose skywards to see such a sight
I remembered while hearing that wonderful sound
That gypsy foretelling the pleasure I found.
